My Michael Reeves Portrait, Circa 1977

From my early Kubert School efforts… This was from my first year at Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art, Inc. (1976-77). I first met my friend Bill Kelley —now, alas, the late Bill Kelley (he passed away a number of years ago)—during my first year at the Joe Kubert School in Dover, NJ. Bill was a writer, filmmaker, and reporter for one of the local newspapers, and he began showing movies from his 16mm feature film collection to Joe and we Kubert School students once a month or so at the School, when it was still in the Baker Mansion (which is now a dorm for the school, which moved to its present downtown Dover location). Among the films Bill showed was Michael Reeves ’s notorious, rarely screened The Witchfinder General (US title: The Conqueror Worm , 1968); it was and remains a riveting and infuriating film, and I have fond memories of glancing over at Joe Kubert at one point during the proceedings and seeing his jaw clenched and the knuckles on his clenched fist blazing white. Yep, it got to us all!
