SDCC ’17: Death Note Clip Introduces Ryuk
by Erik Amaya
There are fewer scarier things than walking up to the voice of Willem Dafoe, but that’s exactly what happens to Light (Lakeith Stanfield) in this clip from Death Note, as screened yesterday at Comic-con International: San Diego.
Based on the manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows Light as he comes across a supernatural notebook within it a great power in its pages: if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the Light begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life. He is enticed into his murder spree by Ryuk, a demon voiced by Dafoe.
An honestly, I would not want to cross Dafoe, even if he wanted to me get in front of him at the line for coffee. The movie looks off-kilter, but Death Note is a world-wide success. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a few Ryuks here at Comic-Con. But the real test will be when Death Note comes to Netflix on August 25th.
