Jesse Rath To Become Supergirl’s Brainiac 5
by Erik Amaya
Supergirl has found one of the most important Legionnaires.
TVLine reports that No Tomororw and Defiance actor Jesse Rath will recur on the series as Querl Dox, aka Brainiac 5 of the Legion of Superheroes. Despite adopting the name of a villain, Dox is a noble, if often irritated, 12th-level intelligence from the 31st Century. He’s also a key member of that century’s premiere organization of galactic dogooders. According to the report, the threat of Reign (Odette Annable) reverberates 1000 years into the future; bringing the Legion into the past to aid Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). Brainy — described as a “half computer, half organic” — will be part of the Legion’s compliment and will take an immediate shine to Kara.
And as long-time Legion readers know, Kara and Brainy are an OTP to rival Clark and Lois. They’re certainly my original OTP as Legion of Superheroes was the first comic book I read religiously. Granted, there was a time when Kara was replaced by Mon-El’s descendant Laurel Gand due to weird Crisis-level timeline fixes, but the original pairing was eventually restored.
Oh, and speaking of Mon-El (Chris Wood), it’s likely he will also return when the Legion arrives in National City. I wonder if he’ll finally have his costume? I wonder if he’ll be called Valor; the name the character adopted in the 1990s when his history was radically revised following Crisis on Infinite Earths.
This is genuinely exciting news for an old Legion fan like me. I’m glad the series pushed the button on the concept so early. The Legion appeared in a handful of Smallville episodes late in its run; including a Brainiac 5 appearance (in the form of James Marsters) in its final year.
Supergirl airs Mondays on The CW.
