Deadpool 2 Teaser Takes On A TV Legend; Offers First Glimpse

by Erik Amaya

20th Century Fox’s first teaser for next year’s Deadpool 2 establishes that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will continue his media assault by playing with tropes and conventions of our collective junk culture. It also suggests the film itself will be worth watching. So what’s Wade’s first trick for his new advertising campaign? Turning into TV legend Bob Ross.

Bob Ross’s The Joy of Painting aired on PBS from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, but never went away completely thanks to reruns and YouTube. Deadpool’s use of the show’s format isn’t a complete recreation, but gets the job done thanks to Wade’s love of masturbation and drugs. Or, at least, making extended jokes about both.
And if the joke didn’t work for you, the teaser still, well, teases the return of old friends and the appearance of Domino (Zazie Beetz). It also suggests the film actually had a pyrotechnics budget this time around. Not that Deadpool really needs explosions, mind. He’s a walking calamity in his own right.
Deadpool 2 opens on June 1st.
