And, once again, Internet fandom proves how selfish it can be.
As spotted by FandomWire, actor Ruby Rose has taken a break from Twitter after facing a storm of harassment following The CW’s announcement that she will play Batwoman Kate Kane in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover and in the potential Batwoman series.
Almost from the moment the announcement hit the internet, critics of the choice pointed to Rose’s alleged lack of acting ability, to the fact she is not Jewish while Kate is, and perhaps most insidiously, that she is not enough of a lesbian to represent the character to the world. There were also a handful of alleged nerds complaining about “turning Batman into a woman” seemingly without knowing Kate has been an established character for over ten years and is herself loosely based on a Silver Age character of the same name.
But thanks to Twitter, those less-than-pleased about Rose playing Batwoman were able to address her directly in screeds of all types. Responding to what she considered to be the most absurd of the criticism, she wrote “Where on earth did “Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman” come from – has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with “she’s too gay” how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.” Wishing “women and the LGBT community supported each other more,” Rose announced she was taking a break from the social media platform by saying “If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”
While disappointment with casting choices is completely valid, harassing the performer is never the correct response. Like Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s Kelly Marie Tran and Titans‘s Anna Diop, Rose faces an enormous wave of hatred for no other reason than accepting a role in a genre project. Endlessly harassing these women into abandoning social media outlets makes the nerd community look incredibly small and exclusionary.
And yet, the harassment continues …
