The Vigilant Preview: The Rebellion-Verse Begins Here

by Richard Bruton

Announced earlier in the year, The Vigilant is a new US-format one-shot comic featuring classic British heroes from the 60s and 70s. Those of us old enough to remember characters such as Adam Eterno, Steel Commando, Thunderbolt and The Leopard From Lime Street have been really looking forward to this one, but new (younger) readers have nothing to worry about, as writer Simon Furman and artist Simon Coleby promise this will be a re-introduction of some genuine classics, updated for today but still having all the elements that made them so popular in their day.
Since acquiring the Fleetway and IPC catalogue, Rebellion, publishers of 2000AD, have been reprinting several titles in collections, but The Vigilant promises to be something else – the beach head for a new Rebellion-verse of superheroes. However, since these are older Brit super-types, expect things to be just a little more eccentric and off-the-wall than your usual US super-types.
And to give you a little taste of just how strange… here’s the character guide:

The Vigilant is released August 15th, 2018 in the UK and on the 2000AD webstore. Readers is the US will be able to get hold of The Vigilant sometime in September – tell your local comic shop to order it!
Below you’ll see a Comicon.com preview of the main strip in The Vigilant, written by Furman with art by Coleby, plus pages from the three back-up strips; Yao by Bruce Leslie and Dani, Deathwish by Karl Stock and Henrik Sahlstrom, and Steel Commando by Aaron Stack and Warwick Fraser-Coombe.
