Details Of Doctor Who New Year’s Day Special Emerge
by Erik Amaya
The BBC has released details of Doctor Who‘s first proper New Year’s Day special.
According to the official synopsis, the story will see a terrifying evil “stirring, from across the centuries of Earth’s history” as The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Ryan (Tosin Cole), Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) return to Sheffield after their recent travels in time and space. But, as the description asks, “will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?”
The Doctor will also sport a festive holiday scarf for the special; which will no doubt become the next hot cosplay item.
While Doctor Who has spent the last decade and change producing Christmas themed specials, new showrunner Chris Chibnall chose to give the holiday a break, focusing instead on New Year’s. The theme allows the story to go in very different directions as the last couple of Christmas Specials used Christmas as a very distant concept.
It is not the first New Year’s Day Doctor Who special, however, as David Tennant’s tenure as The Doctor concluded with “The End of Time, Part II,” which aired on New Year’s Day 2010 despite the story continuing from the Christmas Special the week before. But it was not positioned as a New Year’s Day themed event the way the BBC is advertising the upcoming episode.
Meanwhile, Doctor Who continues its 11th season on BBC America every Sunday.
