And as speculated, Dr. Mid-Nite will join the Justice Society on DC Universe’s Stargirl.
Entertainment Weekly reports actor Henry Thomas will play the Charles McNider version of the character who first debuted in 1941’s All-American Comics #25. Created by Charles Reizenstein and Stanley Josephs Aschmeier, Dr. McNider was a surgeon who was blinded during a mob hit. He subsequently discovered he could see in total darkness; eventually developing a visor which allowed him to see in daylight and special smoke bombs which blocked out the light. He became a costumed crimefighter and eventually joined the Justice Society of America. He also briefly became Starman when Ted Knight suffered a nervous breakdown in the early 1950s. Two others took up the Dr. Mid-Nite name when he went missing in the early 1980s and after his death in 1994.
On Stargirl, Thomas’s McNider is described as “a brilliant and forward-thinking medical pioneer, and a founding member of the JSA.” He also serves as a the group’s physician and chief detective. Other members of the JSA include Joel McHale’s hybrid Starman, Lou Ferrigno Jr as Hourman and Brian Stapf as Wildcat.
The series will focus on Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), a teenage girl who discovers her new stepfather was Starman’s sidekick. Finding the hero’s cosmic staff, she sets out to create her own superhero legend and inspire a new generation of JSA members.
Stargirl debuts on DC Universe in 2019.
