The Justice Society of America will have foes as DC Universe’s Stargirl begins to cast its Injustice Society.
Deadline reports the series has cast Joy Osmanski, Neil Hopkins and Nelson Lee as Tigress, Sportsmaster and Dragon King. All are set to face off against the JSA, which includes Starman (Joel McHale), Hourman (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), Wildcat (Brian Stapf) and Dr. Mid-Nite (Henry Thomas).
Several character have been called Tigress since the first appeared as Zatara’s foe in Action Comics #1. The second, Paula Brooks, appeared nine years later in Sensation Comics #68 in a story by Mort Meskin. The third and most familiar Tigress is an alter ego of Artemis Crock. The series will see the Brooks version “protecting and providing for her family” as she “hunts the world’s most dangerous game – humans.”
Sportsmaster, created by John Broome in 1947’s All-American Comics #85, was foe of the Golden Age Green Lantern and Wildcat. Like Tigress, the TV version of Crusher Crock will see crime as a game to be played for the betterment of his family.
Dragon King is a more recent creation, debuting in 1981’s All-Star Squadron #4. A high ranking Japanese general during World War II, the character aided the Axis powers in creating an energy shield which kept the Justice Society and other powered heroes of the 1940s out of both Germany and Japan. After the war, he made himself partly reptile and resurfaced in Blue Valley, the setting of the Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. comic book series and the Stargirl series itself. On the show, Lee’s Dragon King will come from similar origins as he “has been experimenting on himself and his victims since the 1940s.”
Curiously, one key character not yet cast is Pat Dugan, Starman’s former sidekick and Stargirl’s (Brec Bassigner) step-father. Though one imagines that casting notice will appear very soon.
Stargirl will debut on DC Universe in 2019.
