Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Is Reborn This Summer From Dark Horse

The animated TV series, Space Battleship Yamato has come a long way since its debut in Japan in 1974. It first landed in the U.S. In 1979 as Star Blazers and gained a dedicated fan following. Fast forward to this Summer where manga fans can see the epic saga reborn in Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 from Dark Horse Comics.

Adapted to manga by Michio Murakawa, this tale is based on the anime from Funimation. Aliens from the planet Gamilas have devastated the biosphere. They’re determined to reshape our planet into their new home. An emissary from the distant Iscandar has provided humanity with the means to defeat the alien invaders. The crew of the Yamato must battle its way through the Gamilas fleet to reach Iscandar in order for the technology to heal the Earth. The odds against them are literally astronomical.
Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 will feature covers by Junichiro Tamamori. It’s translated by Zack Davisson and will feature an afterword by animator Tim Eldred. Each double-sized English omnibus edition will collect two Japanese volumes of story, clocking in at 344 pages plus an extensive bonus section featuring Earth and Gamilas spacecraft diagrams.
Volume 1 is due out on July 31st, 2019 and will retail for $19.99. It’s currently available for pre-order on Amazon and your local comic shop.
