Jeremiah (Cameron Monaghan) might finally be off the board, but the fallout from his latest attempt to bond with Bruce (David Mazouz) continues to effect all of Gotham City. And as this preview of next week’s Gotham indicates, the toxin he was brewing at Ace Chemicals will infect people living in the sewers. Which makes sense. Jim (Ben McKenzie) drove a truck full of the stuff into the river. Will this lead to a proper Killer Croc? Meanwhile, there’s never enough madness in town, so a double of Barbara (Erin Richards) shows up to threaten the GCPD.
The notion that the Joker is low-key in love with Batman is an idea some comics develop. Some stories play it as a simple romance while others go with a more esoteric stance. Gotham chose to make it operatic, with Jeremiah looking for friendship and building an exquisite grand guignol revenge suite to bond him and Bruce within hate. He had all the pieces — doubles of Bruce parents, the lucky addition of Jim and Lee (Morena Baccarin) to the final act, and a proper chemical threat to unleash — and I’d say he was at least partly successful. The last we see of him, Bruce is standing over his bed.
Of course, it is still possible Joker and Jeremiah are two separate entities, but that seems unlikely at this point.
