On The Run From The NYPD In Daredevil #3

by Josh Davison

[*Mild Spoilers Ahead!]
Daredevil has been shot by Detective North, and Mayor Wilson Fisk arrives to witness Daredevil’s arrest. The Man Without Fear manages to get away from North, but North and the NYPD aren’t willing to give up that easily. Matt leads them on a trace, but he’s going to have to face down Detective North if he wants to escape…and Mayor Fisk will be there to watch it all.

Daredevil #3 focuses on the police chase of Daredevil throughout Hell’s Kitchen. Detective North is relentless in his pursuit of Matt–even when the other police officers show reluctance.
The comic comes off as enjoyably grounded and, as a result, more intense. While the story may not advance particularly far, the focus on this instance of conflict with the NYPD firmly situates the comic in the noir roots of Daredevil.
We see Matt get a little creative in his evasion too. It’s not solely fleeing and fighting; Matt thinks on his feet in his escape.
Wilson Fisk’s pleasure at Daredevil’s misery adds a bit of flavor to the book too. Kingpin will always be the best Daredevil rogue, and I’m always pleased to see him even just in the background of a story like this.
The ending to the issue is quite a delight too.

Of course, even more than your average comic, an issue like this hinges on the artist being able to perform. Thankfully, Marco Checchetto is an amazing talent and makes this book as fast-moving, atmospheric, and textured as it needs to be. He, along with colorist Sunny Gho, succeed in giving the book the gritty and noir aesthetic that this book and its particular story needs. Checchetto and Gho do amazing work in this book, and I hope they stick around on Daredevil for a long time to come.
Daredevil #3 is another impressive showing for Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, and Sunny Gho. This trio have followed up Charles Soule’s run on the title with back-to-basics approach that has proven to be a great boon for the title. This one gets a recommendation for sure. Check it out.
Daredevil #3 comes to us from writer Chip Zdarsky, artist Marco Checchetto, color artist Sunny Gho, letterer VC’s Clayton Cowles, cover artist Julian Totino Tedesco, and variant cover artists John Romita Jr. with Richard Isanove; Nao Fuji.
