SDCC 2019: Giant Days Concludes With Oversized One-Shot In October

by James Ferguson

All good things must come to a close. With that being said, it’s my sad duty to report that Giant Days, my favorite comic series, is ending. From the looks of things, publisher Boom! Studios is sending it out with a bang with an oversized one-shot this October called Giant Days: As Time Goes By. Written by John Allison and illustrated by Max Sarin, this book gives us one final adventure with Esther, Daisy, and Susan, showing us what their lives are like after they’ve graduated from Sheffield University.

Giant Days: As Time Goes By jumps ahead fourteen months after graduation. The three young women have moved onto different careers, friends, and lives and things are definitely not the same as they were in college. They have a reunion in Sheffield to reconnect and rebuild their close-knit best friendships they once had. With Esther working as a publishing muckety muck in London, will she have time for her old friends? She’ll need to escape the time-sucking vortext of her vampiric co-workers, the Cressidas, and their awful influence. If she doesn’t make it, will Susan and Daisy ever forgive her? Also, what’s McGraw up to at the local key shop?

Creator John Allison says:

This comic has always been about small moments and big catastrophes, so going out with a double-sized special gives me a chance to do plenty of both. It’s impossible to please everybody when you’re saying goodbye, but heaven knows, the Giant Days team are going to try.

I realized earlier this year that Giant Days is focused on a finite amount of time. As Esther, Daisy, and Susan got through school, sooner or later they’d leave this place that brought them together and the series would have to cease to be. I just thought we’d have another year of amazing stories before we got there. I’m still in the denial stage of acceptance.

Artist Max Sarin adds:

Giant Days is about the best of days with friends: joy and laughter, panic and excitement—all the great stuff that life is made of. It’s been amazing working on this series that so many people have embraced and enjoyed throughout the years.

Giant Days will leave behind an impressive legacy, with ten trade paperbacks currently available, along with three special hardcover editions and a collection of John Allison’s original self-published Giant Days stories. There’s also a Giant Days novel by author Non Pratt. I can speak from experience when I say that they’re all great.

Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, Boom! Studios says:

As Time Goes By, friendships and relationships can change but that doesn’t mean they have to disappear completely, and looking at everything Esther, Susan, and Daisy have been through, it’s impossible to think their friendship won’t last forever. John Allison and Max Sarin have created a beautiful tribute to the three university students who not only found best friends in each other but also found an everlasting community in all of us who reveled in their escapades and various misadventures throughout the years.

Giant Days: As Time Goes By #1 is set for release on October 30th, 2019.
