It seems Kate Kane will not be a part of Batwoman‘s second season after all.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plan to recast the role, originally played by Ruby Rose in the show’s first season, has been scrapped in favor of inventing an entirely new character to take on the iconic costume. The site is confirming via their own sources a casting notice on Reddit concerning a character called “Ryan Wilder” is reliable in as must as a new character will take Kate’s place in Season 2. The name may yet be a cover.
A character description of Ryan preserved by Decider before the the Reddit post was deleted describes her as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.” She is said of have run afoul of the Gotham City Police as a drug runner and spent a lot of her life “masking her pain with bad habits.”
The description goes on toe call her a “girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
To be honest, a lot of this still feels like the original description of Kate prior to Rose getting the job and her debut in the “Elseworlds” crossover. It also sounds more like the Batwoman seen in the Detective Comics story by Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III. We have no doubt who ever fits this description will be a great lead for the show … and yet, we have some trepidation in accepting Kate’s complete absence from the show. Although other DC Comics heroes have passed on their identities to others, Kate is an indelible part of Batwoman as a concept, comic, and show. And being set within the Arrowverse’s Earth-Prime, there are any number of surgical, cosmic, or temporal reasons for Kate to have a new face and persona.
To an extent, we hope THR is incorrect and “Ryan Wilder” is just a cover for the new person to audition as Kate without a certain amount of scrutiny. At the same time, we’ll also happily give Ryan a chance when Batwoman returns next year on The CW.
