Beppo is finally making a live-action debut. But in a bit of a twist, the character will be a human woman.
As EW reports, Sofia Hasmik will be a recurring Superman & Lois guest star as Chrissy Beppo. Described as a “go-getter with dreams of bigger and better things, a chance encounter with her idol changes her life trajectory,” the site suggests that idol is, in fact, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch). Indeed, the character is also said to be a budding reporter at the Daily Planet. But her last name suggests another history.
Created by Otto Binder and George Papp, Peppo the Supermonkey debuted in Superboy #76. He was a Kryptonian monkey blasted into space when Jor-El was testing the rocket technology he would eventually use to send Kal-El to Earth. Landing on Earth himself, he found Kal-El while still a toddler and created all sort of havoc for the Kents. Scared of some fireworks in the Kent barn, Beppo spent many years in space, but eventually returned to form the Legion of Super-Pets with Krypto, Streaky the Supercat, and Comet the Superhorse.
Silver Age comics can be wild sometimes.
The character, sadly, never really returned as other elements of Silver Age DC seeped back into Post-Crisis stories. So using the name is more of a tip of the hat to those wackier days than, say, an indication of the sorts of stories Superman & Lois will tell with Chrissy Beppo.
The series stars Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin as the title characters. Following the events of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the couple find they now have two teenage sons. Moving back to Smallville to raise them, the pair must learn to balance their passion for justice with the needs of their family.
Superman & Lois is set to debut in early 2021 on The CW.
