New ‘Black Widow’ Trailer Points To An Emotional Journey

by Erik Amaya

While this new trailer for Black Widow is filled with Marvel-style action, it is also our first real glimpse of the emotional journey Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) will take in the film. It seems her pretend family — “sister” Yelena (Florence Pugh), “father” Alexei (David Harbor), and “mother” Melina (Rachel Weisz) — was not so pretend for Nat and Yelena. Nevertheless, the tactics of the Red Room left them both scarred. And though Nat is on the run in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, her circumstances will invite the opportunity to clear the air. It’s family therapy as only Marvel could do it. Also, that shot of Nat and Clint (Jeremy Renner) on Vormir leaves us wondering if, perhaps, we’ll see Nat among the Avengers once again in Phase 4.

The dichotomy of starting Phase 4 with an Avengers: Endgame prequel has never been lost on us. We’ve always suspected the whole film may take place within that Soul Space glimpsed in Avengers: Infinity War, but it is also possible the film’s purpose in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe is to establish Yelena as the new Black Widow going forward. Pointedly showing Vormir in this trailer suggests the planet will appear in some fashion. Of course, it remains to be seen how it will play out.

The family component, however, was always part of director Cate Shortland‘s pitch. Last year, she told Total Film, “What I really wanted to do was to expose the character and get under her skin. The family created the dynamic with which that would happen. We see a different side of the character, because she’s in scenes with people that know her from when she was a child. She’s not a superhero in those scenes; she’s a daughter or a sister.”

Black Widow finally comes to theaters — and Disney+ via Premiere Access — on July 9th.
