In a bit of brand synergy, Marvel Studios released a new trailer for the upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings during ESPN’s NBA Countdown Thursday night. No matter how it was released, the new preview offer a much better look at the film by giving Shang-Chi’s (Samu Liu) father, Wenwu (Tony Leung), more of a spotlight as a fighter, possessor of the legendary Ten Rings, and the amalgamation of everything Shang-Chi hopes not to be. But as we know from the earlier teaser that Wenwu is calling him home, will he be able to confront the power of the Ten Rings and oppose his father? Hell, will he be able to tussle with the Abomination for that matter?
Of course, the surprise return of The Incredible Hulk antagonist isn’t the only Marvel Easter egg in the trailer. One shot sees Shang-Chi confronting a dragon. Now, it’s easy to assume this is Fin Fang Foom — the Ten Rings originate from his first encounter with the Earth — but Liu said in an interview awhile back that the Jack Kirby monster would not appear in the film. Some are referring to the character as “The Great Protector,” but we have to wonder if, perhaps, something else is happening here.
In the meantime, we have to say the movie looks pretty good with its mixture of martial arts, family drama, and Marvel-ness.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings comes to theaters on September 3rd.
