Sony PlayStation 5 Has Sold 10 Million Units

by Sage Ashford

Sony recently announced that as of July 18th, the PlayStation 5 has sold-through ten million units from its initial launch back in November. Despite the console shortages which have been plaguing the system since day one, Sony also notes that this is the fastest-selling console in history — surpassing even the PlayStation 4‘s popularity.

These sales figures also came with a handful of other major milestones for some of their software:

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac Games has sold more than 6.5 million copies since its November 12, 2020 release
  • MLBThe Show 21 from San Diego Studio sold more than 2 million copies sold across all platforms since releasing on April 16, 2021
  • Returnal from Housemarque has sold more than 560,000 copies since releasing on April 30, 2021
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart from Insomniac Games has sold more than 1.1 million copies since releasing on June 11, 2021

Perhaps most surprising about this information is it means that Sony has kept just as many consoles (or more) available for the PS5 as they did for the PS4 — and they still can’t keep the system on store shelves! This also hearkens back to an axiom former Xbox Vice President Don Mattrick espoused during the seventh generation: “The first company to reach ten million in console sales wins the generation.” Currently, there are no available sales numbers out of Microsoft regarding the Xbox Series consoles, but this isn’t particularly surprising considering Xbox’s greater focus on getting as many people onto Xbox Game Pass as possible, regardless of whether that’s through PC or console. Regardless, Sony has a long way to go if they’re to match up with the PlayStation 4, which has moved over 114 million units in its lifespan.

SIE’s blog post also mentions exclusive titles from PlayStation Studios coming in the future, including Gran Turismo 7, God of War, and Horizon Forbidden West, as well as some of the major third-party titles launching soon, including Battlefield 2042, Deathloop, Far Cry 6, and Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
