‘Stargirl’ Faces The Shade In A Preview Of Next Week’s Episode

by Erik Amaya

Stargirl is wasting no time as Courtney (Brec Bassinger) comes face-to-face with one of her new adversaries: The Shade (Jonathan Cake). Or, at least, that’s what this preview for next week’s episode suggests. But as we fondly remember the character from the pages of Starman, we have to wonder if he really is a foe or if he’ll offer Courtney and the rest of the JSA sage-like advice before the end. Then again, that version of The Shade had a villain riding in his soul, so that could be motivating his presence in Blue Valley.

As for this week, it was interesting to see Courtney deal with jealous as Jennie (Ysa Penarejo) and Pat (Luke Wilson) quickly got down to training. Also, it is interesting to cast Jennie in the role of a direct JSA descendant where Courtney’s team only has Rick (Cameron Gellman) as a blood relative of the older group. In part, it serves as a reminder that Courtney’s disappointment in not being Starman’s daughter is still fresh — even if that episode aired roughly a year ago — also, it gives a new edge to the character. Her positivity has its limits and it’s worth exploring those aspects of the character.

The same is true for the rest of the team. Rick’s decision to feed Grundy is interesting, as is Yolanda’s (Yvette Monreal) unwillingness to discuss Brainwave, and the disruption in Beth’s (Anjelika Washington) family. Also, we imagine Mike (Trae Romano) is about to become quite interesting as his time with the Thunderbolt will be short. All of it is material we want to see the show examine.

All that said, it’s still early days for the Summer School season and it remains to be seen what threads will be of prime importance. Courtney’s jealousy of Jennie may prove to be a blip as more pressing matters come to the fore. As for her part, we hope Jennie sticks around and that finding her brother, typically known to cast shadows of his own, ends up part of the show.

Stargirl airs Tuesdays on The CW.
