Rapture is coming up this summer from Valiant, a “standalone event” written by the amazing Matt Kindt (X-O Manowar, Dept. H) and illustrated by the also quite amazing artist CAFU (Rai). We’ll see the first issue land on May 24th, so not that long to wait, now. Ninjak and Shadowman will team up for a “harrowing journey into the Deadside”, the outcome of which may affect the entire Valiant Universe. They’re up against an evil force whose origin is connected to the origin of Shadowman himself. Things only get more intense from there, it seems.
But in terms of this fantasy-driven and hardship-laden journey of two team-members, Rapture is being compared to Lord of the Rings. And once you see CAFU’s art on this series, you’ll see why. Its painterly qualities give it that high fantasy feel, and that dark foreboding you might well associate with Mordor.
EIC of Valiant Warren Simons has pointed out that these two personalities–Ninjak and Shadowman–are basically polar opposites with Ninjak as a highly rational being and Shadowman as a magic-driven being. The ego and id almost, at work. That’s going to lead to interesting conflicts, but also an interesting alliance. The series is also going to deliver some reveals about Shadowman’s origin, and even the powers at work in the Valiant Universe, though and, according to Simons: “In scope and intensity, this is ‘Lord of the Rings’ for the Valiant Universe, and Rapture will have major ramifications for everyone in its wake.”
Here’s the official description for the Rapture event:
On a scarred landscape, two otherworldly armies prepare to battle one last time, vying for control of a massive tower named from an ancient language no longer permitted to be spoken.
One army is led by a primeval force named Babel, whose goal is singular: to breach “Heaven” no matter the cost. The only thing standing in his way is a gray-haired barbaric warrior, filled with rage and regret – a man who sees this battle as his last chance for redemption. But he knows his depleted forces have little chance of victory unless aid comes soon.
Enter Tama: A 12-year old girl on the crest of a hill overlooking the battle, who has just become humanity’s only hope. The last in an ancient line of mystics who protect the Earth, she has foreseen this battle and knows millions will perish if she’s unable to stop it. Now Tama and her ragtag team of malcontents – Ninjak, Shadowman and Punk Mambo – must somehow defeat an elder god hell bent on piercing the heavens.

This is a full 8 pages of our interior art on Rapture #1, which may be the most amazing interior art reveal I’ve seen in recent weeks:
Rapture #1 lands on May 24th, and is the first of a four part series. With interiors like this, we have a lot to look forward to as the Valiant Universe pushes further into its own fantasy roots and reveals more about its origins.
