A lot of the language being used to describe exactly what Joss Whedon’s involvement will be in a standalone Batgirl film has been varying from the initial report, so in going back to Variety’s scoop on this information, here’s what we know.
Variety says, “Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe”. The new deal got underway a month ago, according to the piece, and negotiations are currently underway.
You may recall that Whedon was originally going to be part of a Wonder Woman film in a deal that never came to fruition, so it’s no surprise he’s making sure things are locked down tight on this project.
But even knowing that, this still feels like a big, official transition to see Whedon stepping into the DCU after his work in the Marvel cinematic universe. Whedon was very clear about moving on from Marvel films to work on his own projects and explore other avenues. Hopefully he’ll find this project allows him the creative room he’s looking for.
