Constantine Vet Christine Boylan To Adapt Painkiller Jane
by Erik Amaya
Deadline reports that Christine Boylan will adapt Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada’s Painkiller Jane. Jessica Chastain is currently set to star and produce the film.
The site describes the title character as a New York City street cop who “develops exceptional regenerative abilities that give her a unique indestructible advantage.” Apparently unkillable, Jane Vasko leaves the department and sets off on a path of destruction as a vigilante.
Originally published by Quesada and Palmiotti’s Event Comics in 1995, the character featured in a number of comic book crossovers. The book also spawned a Sci-Fi Channel television film starring Lost Girl‘s Emmauelle Vaugier in 2005 and a television series on the same network starring Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines‘ Kristanna Loken two years later. Surprisingly, the two productions are considered separate with the character both recast and renamed in the series to more closely reflect the original comic book; even if the setting is more overtly “sci-fi” in the series. It aired for one twenty-two episode season.
Boylan was a story editor on the late, lamented Leverage and wrote two episodes of Constantine before it was cancelled in 2015.
Painkiller Jane is not currently on any release schedule.
