Tradewaiting – October 4th, 2017 Releases

A lot of comics come out every week. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade, or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to come out in trade, or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.

So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of October 4th, 2017.

HIGHLIGHTS

Green Lantern: Kyle Rayner vol. 1

Relatable, controversial, the one true Lantern, Kyle Rayner has borne many descriptions over his publishing history. Why not chose one for yourself?
Completionists and those looking to brush up on some beloved character history are in luck this week as DC publishes the earliest adventures of the Torchbearer Lantern. From Hal Jordan’s disastrous fall in “Emerald Twilight” to the rise of a new Lantern to the death of Alex DeWitt and beyond, it’s a blessedly accessible entry point to this era of Green Lantern history and a lovely way to package these classic adventures from writer Ron Marz and artists including Daryl Banks, Bill Willingham, and Jamal Igle.
Collecting Kyle’s first ten issues of Green Lantern as well as adventures from New Titans and R.E.B.E.L.S. ’94, this volume gives Kyle a well deserved moment in the sun and fans a welcome way to relive or discover the character’s origins.
Mis(h)adra
Serialized superheroes dominate American comics for many reasons, many of them sensible and quite a few fairly silly, but there’s a huge wealth of touching, educational, and artful comics in the indie scene. Of course, the problem is that, especially depending on how indie you like your indie books, very few of them get the attention or publishing they deserve.
Well, whether you’re looking for a stunning artistic communication or a story that’s real and honestly indie, may I draw your attention to Mis(h)adra, the debut graphic novel from writer/artist Iasmin Omar Ata.
Based on the creator’s real-life experiences with epilepsy, Mis(h)adra combines the Arabic words for seizure and “I can’t” into a title that captures the wry honesty of its approach as well as the crushing, largely hidden, weight that its subject matter can bring to bear. Combined with brilliant colors, poignantly poetic imagery, and a lovely and relatable anime aesthetic, Mis(h)adra offers something beautiful and different from much of the professionally published comics world. Its honesty and vulnerability make for a striking graphic novel that more than deserves a look.

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Year One Deluxe Edition

Though I’ve always held onto a certain fondness for them, I think that if you told me that the Power Rangers, the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers no less, would be one of the most balanced and excellently written superhero teams in mainstream comics in 2016, that I would have some healthy skepticism about. But that was before Year One of Boom! Studios’ Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.
From Kyle Higgins, Hendry Prasetya, and colorist Matt Herms, MMPR reimagines the original five teenagers with attitude in the modern-day, making them every bit as cool and heroic as they were in your mind the first time you saw them cause explosions through the sheer grandeur of their posing.
Though the pacing of the story makes the thirteen issue format of this deluxe edition a bit arbitrary, it certainly earns the name. Reprinting the first thirteen issues of the series, with all their backmatter, alongside a lavish gallery of the title’s numerous variant covers, production sketches, a forward from original Green Ranger Jason David Frank, and a brand new backup story featuring Ninjor(!), this is an impressively complete collection. And at a slightly upscaled size, you can enjoy those gorgeous Prasetya/Herms pages and all the variant covers you didn’t have the money to afford in their full glory. If you truly loved this series or you’ve been waiting for the right time to jump on board, Boom! is offering a quite a way to enjoy this series. The $75 price tag is nothing to sneeze at, but if ever it has been morphin’ time, surely this is it.
Whether you’re making your list of NYCC prey or looking for something to sooth your FOMO, there’s a little something for everyone this week. I hardly had the chance to highlight all of it, but here’s Diamond’s complete listing of collections and graphic novels to peruse at your leisure.
