John Noble’s tour of the geek universe continues with a role on Legends of Tomorrow.
Entertainment Weekly reports the Lord of the Rings and Fringe veteran will lend his voice to the mysterious antagonist Mallus starting with tonight’s episode. The character — whose name does not align to an established DC Comics characters — is the presumed season-long antagonist with agents already resurrecting dead villains to join his legion. Mere mention of his name strike fear in the heart of the Time Bureau and leaves Rip Hunter no alternative by to turn to the Legends in order to stop him. Other than that, little is known about the character.
Executive producer Marc Guggenheim told EW that viewers will learn more about him in the season’s fifth episode and that he’s enjoyed presenting Mallus as little more than “a name and is this whisper.” At this point, I hope Mallus is an entirely new character with no other identity. The Scooby-Doo style reveal became a big crutch for The Flash and worked its way into Arrow last year. Also — and I can’t believe I’m saying this — not every Berlantiverse antagonist needs to be sourced from the DC library. It’s nice that it’s work so well up until now, but it can hamper the storytelling.
That said, there’s still room for Mallus to be Ambush Bug or something.
