Tradewaiting – November 15th, 2017 Releases: Cloudia And Rex, Animosity: The Rise & More

A lot of comics come out every week. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade, or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to come out in trade, or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.

So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of November 15th, 2017.

HIGHLIGHTS

Cloudia And Rex

Easily one of my most surprising and rewarding impulse buys of the last year, Cloudia and Rex is a fantastic little series that you may not have heard of yet, I know I hadn’t.
On the evening of December 21, 2012, a strained family sets out on a cross country move unaware that a shift of biblical proportions is taking place above them. As the thirteenth Mayan b’ak’tun draws to a close, the High Waveform seeks to collapse all gods into a single divinity, ending their immortal lives and erasing their myths. Seeking to escape, Thanatos leads an exodus to the mortal realm, unintentionally sealing the gods within Cloudia and Rex.
This book is good. It’s wildly creative and beautifully centered in its character’s emotional struggles. Ulises Farinas and Erick Freitas write some of the most striking and palpable family dynamics I’ve seen, not to mention some of the most lovable and true-to-life children you’ll read this year. Throw in Daniel Irizarri‘s incredible designs and lush coloring and you’ve got an impressive little miniseries.
With all the excitement about Catalyst Prime, Cloudia and Rex passed me by and I’m willing to say that I probably wasn’t the only one. Thankfully, Lion Forge is releasing the entire series in trade for only $9.99. At that price you can’t afford not to give this one a try.

Animosity: The Rise

Animosity is by far the breakout success of Aftershock comics and that position is well earned. It’s a grounded adventure tale centered around a complex platonic love story, all taking place amidst a brilliantly simple speculative fiction premise. And, as good as it is, Animosity: The Rise may just be a little better.
Though the name and solicitation highlight that this series is filling in the time skip between The Wake and the main Animosity title, The Rise‘s appeal is far more than that, providing a top-down, urban counterpoint to the questing, rural ideas of its sister series.
What makes The Rise so great, at least for me, is that it answers that modern, perhaps millennial, urge to want to rise to answer times of hardship. Animosity follows the familiar apocalyptic path of survival horror, breaking down society and investing us in a small band who have nothing but eachother, but The Rise goes the other way. Where the main series pits Jesse’s youthful optimism against Sandor, a jaded hero who cares about nothing but Jesse’s safety, The Rise sees that instinct to care for everyone and presents it as the adult option and one that is in no way easy or optimistic when confronted head on.
Marguerite Bennett effortlessly crafts a second cast of characters that’s every bit as charming as Jesse and Sandor and then sets about examining the realities of this world. The art is much more stylized and eerie, but Juan Doe makes this an undeniably striking series.
Released as part of Local Comic Shop Day, Aftershock says that this hardcover ‘graphic album-style’ limited edition with be the only Animosity: The Rise collection ever printed, though there is some ambiguity as to whether the issues will be reprinted as part of other collections. Despite the rarity, it retails for just $19.99. I won’t lie to you and say that that’s not a little pricier than the average asking on a three-issue miniseries, but it sounds like a rare opportunity to get this excellent series in a particularly beautiful printing.
Whether you’re a fan of the core series, have never heard of Animosity, or just want to pick up the issues again in an attractive new binding, Animosity: The Rise is a great little series, and one that’s being collected to help support your local comic shop. Can’t think of a better excuse to grab some great comics than that.
