He Is What He Is: IDW’s Popeye Classics #64 Still Packs A Punch

by Olly MacNamee

Allow me the privilege of indulging with you he preview of IDW’s Popeye Classics #64. In just a couple of years this spinach snaffling sailor will turn 90, with Olive Oyl reaching her centenary. And, when the time comes, I’ll be the first to shout out a hearty ‘Happy Birthday’ to the both of them.
Popeye was the first comic book character I took to heart (I can still do a rather decent sketch of Popeye in under a minute; something I learnt to do as a child and then sold them to my mates at lunchtime in school) and avidly read all about him and his introduction into the Thimble Theatre newspaper strip back in 1929 as a throwaway character who got all the love. And, as they say, the rest is history.
But, until then, let’s have a looks at this week’s issue, with E.C. Segar’s successor, Bud Sagendorf at the drawing board and reprinting strips from 1962.
