Joel Hodgson Announces Season 12 Of Mystery Science Theater 3000 On Netflix

 
Since the summer, fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 have anxiously awaited word about further seasons of the beloved series on Netflix. Yesterday evening, they finally got their wish as creator Joel Hodgson and new cast members Jonah Ray and Felicia Day announced the series will return for another season on the streaming video service.

After its 1999 departure from the then Sci-Fi Channel, Mystery Science Theater 3000 went dormant. Its participants eventually found other outlets for its form of comedy — movie riffing — but Shout! Factory eventually bought the series from executive producer Jim Mallon while Hodgson orchestrated a Kickstarter campaign to prove its audience was not only still around, but had grown in the years since it went off the air. The 2015 campaign was successful and led to the series’s 11th season, referred to as “The Return,” debuting on Netflix earlier this year.
In an email to Kickstarter backers earlier this week, Hodgson mentioned the 11th season was one of the platform’s strongest offerings on Netflix. So, a renewal announcement seemed inevitable; not that this stopped anxious fans worrying about the seeming “delay” in announcing Season 12.
At the moment, it is unclear how many episodes Hodgson and his team will produce or when the new season will debut, but it seems the show’s second life is secure. Besides the new season, a second live tour is being planned for next year, in addition to a Mystery Science Theater 3000 comic book from Dark Horse Comics.
