20th Century Fox has released a trailer for the upcoming Robert Rodriguez/James Cameron film Alita: Battle Angel. And while it looks impressive — with a number of shots derived straight from anime techniques — the eyes of the title character will leave you a little unsettled.
Which I suppose is intentional. The film, based on the manga by Yukito Kishiro, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ Rosa Salazar stars as a female cyborg discovered in a junkyard by a seemingly kindly scientist played by Christoph Waltz. Lacking memories of her previous life except for deadly martial arts training, she becomes a bounty hunter sometime in the 26th Century.
And if you look closely enough, other androids in the trailer lack Alita’s large eyes.
The film was a passion project of director James Cameron for decades, but he finally handed it off to Rodriguez after committing to four Avatar sequels. Cameron stayed on as a producer and the results of their collaboration look encouraging. Well, once you get use to those giant eyes.
Seriously, it’s creepy.
Alita: Battle Angels opens on July 20th, 2018.
