Tradewaiting – January 3rd, 2018 Releases: Generation Gone, Aquaman: The Waterbearer, & More

Welcome to 2018! A lot of comics come out every week and every year. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade, or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to come out in trade, or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.
So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of January 3rd, 2018.
HIGHLIGHTS
Generation Gone vol. 1
Unfortunately it seems that, for many of my generation, the word of this decade has been “unfulfilled”. We work at day jobs that are unfulfilling, dreaming of the pursuits we were promised were attainable, knowing that we could probably do something great, and fearful that our potential too will remain unfulfilled. Millennials, Ales Kot writes, “have had their future taken away from them.” In Generation Gone, “They are getting ready to steal it back.”
When three young hackers break into a top secret government database they find their own DNA hacked in return, granting them incredible powers, a chance to make good on the better world they said they would build, and all of the drama and interpersonal conflict that being young and idealistic and alone brings with it. Quite honestly, any series that’s able to tackle those issues without falling into trite platitudes is worth a look, but Generation Gone also provides a new and modern superpowered origin story as well as a core narrative about three friends and what exactly they’re waiting for.
Aquaman: The Waterbearer
This has always been an underrated run for an underrated hero. Though it was never going to fully bring Aquaman into the spotlight, The Waterbearer is a solid story that does a fantastic job of offering something that Batman and Superman can’t and Wonder Woman wouldn’t. Aquaman has always struggled between being both a monarch and an adventurer, between the sea and the land, the unseen and the indisputable. The Waterbearer is one of the stronger attempts to reconcile these forces, taking Arthur Curry out of his palace and into a world of magic and symbols that feels fresh, vast, and uniquely his. With a story that’s tied to the “Obsidian Age” arc in JLA, this one is probably aimed squarely at preexisting fans of the character, who will be thrilled to have another take on the king of the seas back in print. However, newcomers may find this take on an old classic to be just what they needed to get attached.
So feel free to bring back the water hand anytime, DC…
