Demonstrations On All Sides Brings Black Lightning To The Streets In A Preview Of Next Week’s Episode
by Erik Amaya
Returning after so many years away has not been easy for Black Lightning‘s Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams). Physically, using his power appears to leave him wrecked. And it seems it has broken things with his ex-wife Lynn (Christine Adams) again. But in the court of public opinion, Black Lightning’s return is inspiring some action with people desperate to take back Freeland from the 100 and its secretive leader Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon Jones III). In the following preview of next week’s episode, the people take to the streets in a demonstration of unity and hope. But the 100 are not interested in such things, so Black Lightning will have to watch from the heights and, hopefully, keep people safe.
I kind of fear for Lynn as a character. Not so much that Tobias will fridge her, but more that she’ll become a victim of Skyler White Syndrome. Like the wife on Breaking Bad, Lynn has very legitimate concerns for her family’s well-being. She even likens Jeff’s need to be a hero to an addiction. But since she’s not the protagonist, her concerns get in the way of the hero’s call to action. Which, much like like Skyler, makes her an antagonist. That’s a shame as this more realistic look at superheroing shattering a marriage is good material. It just might push Lynn into a place where viewers may treat her as a villain.
Black Lightning airs Tuesdays on The CW.
