Despite the forces of (development) hell, Matt Ryan’s John Constantine will be joining Legends of Tomorrow on a more permanent basis. Provided the show is renewed for a fourth season.
According to TVLine, Ryan’s guest star status will be upped to season regular should the series return next year. The character fills the remaining seat left vacant when both halves of Firestorm — Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh) and Martin Stein (Victor Garber) — left the series mid-season. One of those chairs aboard the Waverider was quickly filled with The Flash‘s Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale), whose also-ran status on that show made him a perfect candidate for the Legends crew. Constantine himself made a splendid return to The CW’s Arrowverse in Legends‘ mid-season debut this past January, seeking Sara Lance’s (Caity Lotz) aid in exorcising a young girl of a demon who happened to known Sara’s name. He is also slatted to return in tonight’s episode.
Ryan first took on the coat and charm of DC’s favorite magician for the short lived NBC Constantine series. Shortly after the show was cancelled, Arrow star Stephen Amell began making waves about bringing the character to Star City. He eventually appeared in a season 3 episode in Lian Yu flashbacks to introduce Oliver Queen (Amell) to the supernatural and to help reunite Sara’s soul with her body. At the time, the appearance was said to be a one-off with Warner Bros. Pictures developing a Justice League Dark film featuring the character. But as plans shifted, the character became available again for what was said to be another brief appearance this season.
The character will also appear in an upcoming CW Seed Constantine animated series with Ryan voicing the character as he is the undisputed Constantine actor at this point. Hopefully, he’ll enjoy access to the snacks aboard the Waverider should Legends continue.
Legends of Tomorrow airs Mondays on The CW.
