The Toys The Made Us Season Two Trailers Offers A Glimpse Of Transformers’ Origins

by Erik Amaya

Netflix’s documentary series The Toys That Made Us returns later this month with four more deep dives into the history of special toy brands of the 1980s. The quartet of episodes includes looks at The Transformers, Hello Kitty, Star Trek, and LEGO brand building blocks; a phase I’m sure will be mentioned in the hour-long episode.

The Star Trek episode will also be interesting as it’s never been a big toy brand outside the collectors’ markets — at least, that’s how it seemed to me during the Playmates action figure era — but I bet that will be a big part of the episode. And considering just how surprising and epic the Barbie episode in season one was, I expect the Hello Kitty! episode to be as equally revealing. But the big draw here is The Transformers. Though my love of the brand begins and ends with the Generation 1 toys and cartoon, its longevity cannot be denied and it will be interesting to learn how re-purposed Japanese toy models gave rise to a 30-year business.
The Toys That Made Us returns on May 25th.
