Tradewaiting – June 6th, 2018 Releases: Strong Female Protagonists And The Monsters Who Love Them

by Noah Sharma

A lot of comics come out every week. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade, or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to be published as a trade, or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.

So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of June 6th, 2018.

HIGHLIGHTS

Strong Female Protagonist Book 2
I stumbled onto Strong Female Protagonist one evening a few years ago. At the time I hadn’t yet heard of the creators and it was solely available as a webcomic. But I devoured the archives in a single night.
Strong Female Protagonist follows Alison Green, one of Earth’s first superheroes. As Mega-Girl, she’s super strong, nearly invulnerable, and not actually making anyone’s life better. Having run out the high of riskless adventure and hollow praise, Alison retires from the caped life and heads to college, desperate to save the world another way.
It’s a brilliant concept that easily could have been bungled by overconfidence or preachy writing, but SFP is great precisely because it avoids those pitfalls, telling a story not about the uselessness of superheroes but the difficulty, and therefore the importance, of any form of heroism. Brennan Lee Mulligan mixes loving satire with disarmingly genuine considerations of privilege, heroism, and how to change your life. Throw in Molly Ostertag‘s art and you’ve got a superhero world that feels real in a way that Marvel hasn’t offered in decades.
Mulligan and Ostertag partnered with Top Shelf to finally bring SFP to print and wide-scale distribution in late 2014 and now they’re back with two more chapters, offering over three-hundred pages of full-color wonder. Marking the strip’s transition to color and some of its most striking and memorable moments, book 2 offers another helping of one of the best and most thoughtful superhero universes I’ve had the pleasure to visit. Your ticket there will cost $24.99 and it goes on sale this week.

Gotham City Garage vol. 1

The Bombshells universe has proven an unexpected blockbuster for DC, at least for the company. Based on the line of statues, the comic series has proven a reliably wonderful Elseworlds for DC. But the last issue comes out in print this week; is it any wonder DC has tried to capture that lightning in a bottle again?

The second series based on a line of statues that reimagines DC heroines, Gotham City Garage has not had the same popularity as Bombshells, whether in resin or ink, but that doesn’t diminish how much fun this series is.
Split between a dystopian Gotham, kept in line by Governor Luthor and his enforcer The Bat, and the deserted Freescape beyond its domed borders, Gotham City Garage follows Kara Gordon as she discovers that her world was not what the LexCorp emotion control told her and that she is not who, or what, she thought she was. With a heavy dose of Mad Max awesome, GCG throws wonderful characters like Wonder Woman, Big Barda, and Catwoman into new roles. Making Batman the enemy immediately tells you that this isn’t just a change of genre and the character work that made Bombshells a success is on display here too, as DC’s heroes and villains find new and natural niches in this motorcycle riding, anti-fascist dystopia.
It’s not surprising to find Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly behind this kind of craziness and the duo hit it with the same enthusiasm and excitement that defines much of their output. This is a series that isn’t afraid to go big but it takes its madness seriously. This first collection sells for the DC standard $16.99 and contains the first six print issues of the series, so gas up and head to your LCS if you dare.
InSEXts Year One

Speaking of Marguerite Bennett, she’s found enormous success at Aftershock Comics with Animosity, but, ever the overachiever, that’s hardly all she’s cooked up for them. One of the initial slate of Aftershock titles, InSEXts is something rawer and more ferocious from Bennett. Amidst the streets of Victorian England a familiar story plays out. The daughter of a wealthy lesser family finds herself caught in an abusive marriage for the sake of pairing wealth and title, finding solace only in her lady’s maid and the secret love they share. But there’s a parasite growing between those well trod pages. Thanks to a secret brought back from far away, something real and monstrous gestates behind the guise of pampered femininity until the people inside have the power to overtake their oppressors.

In the end the duo let the master die in an all too common manner: in childbirth, as their beloved larva hatches out of his stomach. But there are consequences for those who try to flip the script and the supernatural does not exist for the just alone. Quickly the lovers discover that there are monsters they never dreamed of, that there are plenty more among the elite of London, and that both are unwilling to let the status quo change,

Gorgeously illustrated by Ariela Kristantina, Insexts is an incredible example of a decidedly specific genre: an erotic lesbian liberation story told through the lens of historical horror. With lush visuals, creeping concepts, and positively venomous prose, Insexts is a unique and underappreciated book and it’s just gotten even easier to collect it.
With this Year One edition you get the entire series thus far, presented in a really lovely collectors edition hardcover with production sketches and notes in the backmatter. Getting all twelve issues bound this way does raise the price tag a little, this egg sac of ominous ideas sells for $44.99, but that’s just a little more than the paperback collections. Whether you’re looking for something sensual, frightening, or liberating, InSEXts should not, and will not, be ignored.
Kaijumax: Season Three

Whether you know Baragon from Barugon or can’t understand how this book doesn’t get sued by Pacific Rim for that title, Kaijumax is the giant monster series for you. I can say that with confidence because it’s one of the only giant monster series that I could probably recommend to anyone.

When a kaiju goes on a rampage through Tokyo there simply have to be consequences. We humans can’t afford to write them off as natural disasters or native gods or defenders of all Asia or misunderstood creatures trying to survive in a world that’s too small for them any more, the only thing to do for our safety and theirs is to lock them up. And that’s where Kaijumax Penitentiary comes in.
One part Daikaiju eiga love letter, one part prison drama, and one part brilliant satire of both, Kaijumax is simply fantastic. Cartoonist Zander Cannon‘s over-the-top giant monster jailhouse is full to the brim with hilarious references to all manner of Kaiju goodness, but even if you’ve never seen a suitmation flick in your life this strange, tragicomic prison drama is absolutely worth your time and money.
Last season we followed Electrogor as he continued his desperate quest to get back to his children, but there’s plenty still going on within the walls of Kaijumax. The manipulative Zonn still has his hooks in Doctor Zhang and a power vacuum remains unfilled after the assassination of Ape-Whale!
Kaijumax is very much unlike anything else out there right now and it’s the kind of series that will leave you hungry as a newborn Rodan for more, so getting the third season collected is a definite treat. The trade retails for a reasonable $19.99 and you will want season three the minute you get done with the second trade, possibly even the first!
*****
That’s another huge Tradewaiting, so much so that I didn’t even get the chance to hype some fantastic collections of classic comics or OGNs! This may be the biggest week for OGNs and collected comics since I started the column, so if you’re not seeing the perfect book for you above, read on to find Diamond’s complete listing of collections and graphic novels for this week, I’m sure they’ve got something wonderful for you.
