Tradewaiting – August 15th, 2018 Releases: Hearts Of Steel

by Noah Sharma

A lot of comics come out every week. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade, or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to be published as a trade, or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.

So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of August 15th, 2018.

HIGHLIGHTS

Transformers: Lost Light vol. 3
If you’re familiar with my work here at Comicon, you’ll already know that I adore IDW’s Transformer comics. Transformers: Lost Light is another name for the third season of the rightly acclaimed Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye and three seasons and six years has done little to slow this series’ momentum.
With the end of IDW’s Transformers universe almost upon us, James Roberts packs this issue with some of the milestones that fans cannot afford to miss. One of this season’s most beautiful issues starts us off as Roberts and a best of IDW’s TF artists show us a journey to the Afterspark, the end of the Knight Quest, and the final Scavengers adventure!? A return from MTMTE artist Alex Milne sets the standard to be met by Brendan Cahill and series regular Jack Lawrence, ensuring that the story looks great throughout, with “The Everlasting Voices” representing Lawrence really taking hold of the series just in time to close it with a bang.
While Lost Light vol. 3 is many things – an examination of loss and meaning, a question of what it means to be happy, the canonical introduction of MPreg to the Transformers brand (!?) – it is not necessarily a perfect jumping on point. May its inclusion here serve as yet another of my entreaties to pick this series up at the beginning for those who have not yet, but many of those I’m speaking to here are not new to this. Whether you’ve been waiting patiently, dodging spoilers left and right, or want a physical book alongside your digital singles, your wait is over today.
If past releases are anything to go by, the ‘special features’ are likely to be sparse, but there’s more than enough in these issues to keep you reading and rereading in horror and heart-melting joy for hours and days and years to come. At $19.99 you’re getting it for the same price as the singles, a slight bummer, but you should know by now that there are few series that can offer you as much for your $4.00 a month as this one. Don’t miss this penultimate installment and, if you’re not caught up, take advantage of this chance to enjoy the final three issues monthly.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Fullmetal Edition vol. 2

The last volume of this series made the cut for Tradewaiting back in May, but Fullmetal Alchemist is a manga that just gets better as it goes on. The first Fullmetal Edition introduced us to the Elric brothers, the science of alchemy, and the Amestrian military in the first six chapters of the original series, but mangaka Hiromu Arakawa wasted no time upending that status quo in these chapters. With new antagonists in the form of Scar and the homunculi, who begin to act in the open around now, and the first real hints that the Amestrian Military has been corrupted, the Elrics are already surrounded on all sides. In order to recover they return home, only to discover the a secret that could unravel the conspiracy and restore their bodies.

These stories represent something of a transitional phase for Fullmetal Alchemist as the story begins to establish what it will be about. Though what’s to come is even sweeter, this volume is full of beloved moments that took my breath away when I first read the series, including the introduction of Ishval, the secret of the Philosopher’s Stone, and the first appearance of ALEX LOUIS ARMSTRONG!

The Fullmetal Edition gives the classic manga the deluxe treatment with new lettering, an updated translation, design sketches, new insert art, and color version of selected pages. It also offers high quality paper, a larger print size, and a lovely hardcover binding with metallic lettering. Assuming this volume follows the trend its predecessor started, it will contain six chapters of the original manga, compared with four in the first printings and twelve in the larger 3-in-1 collections. Personally, that sounds perfect to me, a little extra bang for your buck but not so much that things get lost in the binding. Fullmetal Edition vol. 2 sells for $19.99, a fairly standard manga price for a very much above average manga printing.

Those were some very predictable suggestions for me, but I stand by them 100%. If my tastes aren’t quite doing it for you, there’s still plenty waiting for you. Here’s Diamond’s complete listing of collections and graphic novels for this week to peruse at your leisure.
