Crystal Reed is trading in the penthouses of Gotham for the swamps of DC Universe.
Deadline reports the actor will play Abby Arcane in Swamp Thing. Based on characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, the series will focus on Abby, who returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana; where she learns of the mystical forces in the swamp and discovers her lost love Alec Holland may not be so lost after all. The character is described as a “smart and caring” CDC doctor with a “strong sense of empathy puts her at the center of a horrific life-threatening epidemic in her hometown, where she faces emotional demons from her past.”
Battlestar Galactica‘s Mark Verheiden and It‘s Gary Dauberman wrote the pilot and will also serve as showrunners on the series. Underworld‘s Len Wisemen boarded the series earlier this week to direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer. The series will skew more toward the horror elements of its comic book source, with particular attention played to ideas from Alan Moore’s classic run on the series.
Reed joined the cast of Gotham in its fourth season as Sofia Falcone, a mob boss in the making who bewitched Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and orchestrated a very successful hit on an unlikely rival for control of the city. Presumably she will continue in that role during Gotham‘s fifth and final season, which is set to air next year.
Swamp Thing debuts on DC Universe in 2019.
