Birds Of Prey Feature Due Out In February Of 2020
by Erik Amaya
The next phase of the DC film universe beings to take shape.
Deadline reports Birds of Prey will debut on February 7th, 2020. Based on a concept spearheaded by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and writer Chuck Dixon, but later refined by Gail Simone, the Birds of Prey were former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, Black Canary and the Huntress. With Babs running missions as Oracle, Canary and Huntress were her field team. Eventually, other character joined the group even as the title took momentary breaks over the last twenty years.
In the upcoming Cathy Han-directed film, Barbara has been replaced by Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), but Huntress and Canary remain. The team will also welcome Cassadra Cain and Renee Montoya to the lineup as the team faces off against Gotham City monster Black Mask. None of the parts have been cast as yet, but with production ramping up, expect to learn some names in the next week.
Of course, the film will not be Robbie’s only upcoming appearance in the DC film universe. A “Joker and Harley” project is still in the works with co-writer Glenn Ficarra recently joking the film will open with Harley kidnapping Dr. Phil to help her and Mistah J work through some issues. He also claimed the script mixes the Bad Santa sensibility with the NBC television drama This is Us.
Which, honestly, all sounds like a joke.
Jared Leto will return to play the Joker in that project, which is not to be confused with the Joker film he’s developing or Todd Phillips’ The Joker, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and is currently shooting.
Okay, it’s kind of confusing, but the key takeaway here: Birds of Prey will soon be in production and will hit theaters in 2020.
