Waves From Boom! Studios Travels Through Pain Towards Hope

by James Ferguson

One of the aspects of comics that I love is how the medium can be used to tell almost any story. Sure, you can have super heroes or horror or sci-fi, but there’s also room for personal, dramatic stories. Such is the case with Waves, a new original graphic novel coming in February 2019 from Boom! Studios. It’s a moving story based on author Ingrid Chabbert’s real life experiences trying to conceive. Illustrated by Carole Maurel, the comic chronicles a woman’s exploration of her pain in order to rediscover hope.

Waves follows a young couple as they prepare to announce their pregnancy after years of difficulty in trying to conceive. Unfortunately, their joyous day is replaced with one of unexpected heartbreak. This tests their relationship as they look ahead, working together to put the pieces back together in the midst of such a devastating loss. They must face the reality that they may never conceive a child of their own.
Executive Editor Sierra Hahn says:

Waves is a powerfully understated exploration of one couple’s heartbreaking loss of a baby and, perhaps, their dream of ever conceiving. Chabbert and Maurel use the very creation of this book to explore the journey of healing through self-acceptance, forgiveness, and the act of creating art that channels such pain into stories that rebuild, revive, and remember.

This sounds like a deeply emotional tale that will hit close to home for some. It’s moving just reading the description of the book. It seems like Chabbert is setting a pretty high bar for her graphic novel debut with this.
Waves is set for release on February 27th, 2019.
