Beloved 80s action star Kurt Russell is shifting gears away from playing Living Planets to an Earthly legend in Netflix’s upcoming Holiday flick The Christmas Chronicles. As strange as it might seem, he’s aged into playing Santa Claus. But as seen in the trailer the streaming platform released earlier this week, this Santa may not be in the jolly Coca-Cola image of old.
While Christmas movies are not our usual beat around here, Russell’s presence sets it apart. His role as Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a celebration of his status to kids who grew up in the 80s. Though his character was ultimately a darker presence, showing up in the form of Kurt Russell made absolute story sense. And you can bet a month’s subscription that Netflix is banking on that affection to bring new sets of eyes to their holiday offerings. Netflix has been making Christmas-themed pictures for a few years now, but they lean toward the Lifetime model and slip under the radar of more geek-focused outlets. Russell kind guarantees that we cannot ignore it.
And if you’ve ever read Your Cheese Weekend Movie, you’ve probably guessed a movie like this is catnip for me. Good or bad, I expect to be entertained. Of course, there’s always the possibility that it will be merely mediocre — the lot of most holiday movies — but hopefully it will join the rarefied heights of a cheesy Christmas movie.
The Christmas Chronicles arrives November 22nd.
