Stephen Amell Offers First Look At John Wesley Shipp’s Elseworlds Identity

It was really only a matter of time before John Wesley Shipp found his way back into his original Flash costume.
Arrow star and social media master Stephen Amell has released another behind-the-scenes photo from the set of the upcoming “Elseworlds” crossover event that has fans in a tizzy. Besides offering a good look at Amell in The Flash costume, it also features Shipp in a recreation of the Flash costume he wore as Barry Allen in the 1990 CBS drama series, The Flash

Shipp’s involvement in the newer Flash series has always been something of a homage to his brief time as the fastest man alive. While he initially played Henry Allen on The CW version of The Flash, Barry’s (Grant Gustin) first trip into the timestream at the end of the first season offered viewers a glimpse of Shipp as Barry from the earlier program. Since that time, Shipp has been regularly asked what it would take to get him into the suit. He always laughed it off and eventually became the program’s version of original Flash Jay Garrick; complete with a re-imagined take on his Golden Age costume.
From the photo, it’s clear Elseworlds will take us further into the multiverse than any previous Arrowverse crossover. What is still unclear is the nature of Gustin and Amell’s roles in this situation. Are they from an Earth where Barry became Green Arrow and Ollie The Flash or are the actors switching roles completely? And since we’re asking questions, why is the 1990s Barry Allen there with them?
“Elseworlds” begins December 9th on The CW.
