The Pierce Family Falls Apart In A Look At Next Week’s Black Lightning
by Erik Amaya
With the crisis in South Freeland resolved, Black Lighting begins a new book, “The Book of Rebellion.” An appropriate title considering it begins with Jennifer (China Anne McClain) and Khalil (Jordan Calloway) leaving Freeland in defiance of her parents. Of course, there’s plenty of good reason for Khalil to find a new home; he’s running from Tobias’s (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) abusive tendencies. Not that this will matter to Jefferson (Cress Williams), who appears to drive Anissa (Nafessa Williams) away in this preview of next week’s show.
And really, the tactics of the Pierce parents had to come under scrutiny eventually. Their attempts to protect Jennifer led directly to her letting Khalil back into her heart and a desire to flee from a house which had become a prison. It’s also why Anissa has rarely appeared as Thunder this season and is seeking another home dynamic with Grace (Chantal Thuy). The fallibility of parents is something these shows rarely tackle; except as simple one-episode plot points. Hopefully, Black Lightning will give the issue an entire book before allowing the Pierces to establish some sort of accord.
Black Lightning airs Tuesdays on The CW.
