Wonder Woman #60 Starts To Click For The New Team
by Tony Thornley
Wonder Woman has always had one foot in mythology while remaining in Man’s World. This issue shows that it may firmly be both feet, as the Gods may be fully coming to Earth.

G. Willow Wilson, Cary Nord, Mick Gray, Romulo Fajardo, and Pat Brosseau continue their run in this issue. It’s clear that that mission statement isn’t just to have Diana look at her place in Man’s World, but also to establish a new mythology for the DCU.
Diana and Ares debate what their place is on Earth (partially with their firsts, partially with words). In the midst of this, she continues to try to find Steve Trevor. However, Steve is in more trouble than anyone realizes when he finds himself face to face with the benefactor of the monsters who have taken his captive.

Wilson has struck a very difficult balance here. She is able to tell an exciting action story, but also hits resonant beats with both emotional and philosophical weight. The way Diana questions herself rings true extremely well. Often a plot point like that feels tacked on or arbitrary, but not here.
The art is improving, though it’s still not totally clicking. Where the last two issues had strange moments, with awkward poses and anatomy that didn’t feel right, this issue feels like Nord and Gray have gotten more familiar and comfortable with the book. It’s still GOOD, just not quite great.

There are several splash pages in the issue that are just stunning however. They really sell the majesty of the mythical beings inhabiting the story’s pages. Fajardo’s color work continues to click, with a palette that makes the war zone and the mythology fit seamlessly together.
This is a good book that’s still getting its legs underneath it, but it’s worth jumping in.
