Dynamite Digs Into Red Sonja’s Early Years In New Series

by James Ferguson

We’ve seen Red Sonja as the confident warrior legend, but how did she become such a fierce combatant? Dynamite Entertainment will show us the young, raw, and reckless adventurer she started as in Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil this June. Written by Luke Lieberman, illustrated by Sergio Davila, and colored by Ulises Arreola, finds Sonja against the demon conqueror Raka who has turned men into thralls. Her mentor, Ozzyus plays a part as this is set before he shuffled off this mortal coil.

Writer Luke Lieberman says:

This story is about her figuring out what kind of woman she wants to be, what she wants to do with her gift of violence. Sonja is a total badass, but what makes her so compelling and iconic is her humanity. She sees the world for what it is and she is who she is unapologetically. She has already taken the worst Hyboria can dish out, so there is nothing left to fear. Despite this hardness, or perhaps because of it, she recognizes innocence as rare and precious and she will protect it.

Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil will feature three covers for each issue. Lucio Parrillo is turning in some awesome painted pieces while Davila is creating a more old school look. Finally, Dynamite will have a set of cosplay photos featuring Shannon Kingston for a third option.

Joe Rybandt, Dynamite Executive Editor added:

Luke and Sergio make a killer combo, telling a dark, thrilling, and action-packed early Red Sonja adventure.

Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil is set to kick-off in June. It serves as a complement to the current ongoing Red Sonja series as well as the upcoming Red Sonja & Vampirella Meet Betty & Veronica crossover. Needless to say, it’s a good time to be a Red Sonja fan.
