Idris Elba Reportedly Playing A Different Suicide Squad Member

Thought definitely suited for the role, it appears Idris Elba will not play Deadshot in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Variety reports the actor will instead play a different member of Task Force X as Warner Bros. Pictures would like to keep the part available for Will Smith should he ever want to return. Though the studio declined comment on the matter, the site additionally reports the decision to move Elba into another role was meant as a sign of respect for Smith’s contribution to the original film.
Which suggests reports that the film is being viewed as a complete reboot are also incorrect.
Further fueling the feeling that The Suicide Squad is a sequel is the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quin, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Although much has been said about the film being viewed as something of a do-over, the return of so many characters suggests some sort of continuity will exist between the two productions. But considering the very Suicide Squad format allows for characters to appear and disappear as the story demands, continuing specific character plots is not as essential as it would be in, say, an X-Men film.
Meanwhile, feel free to speculate who Elba might play. A supposed list of other team members surfaced online a while back with names like Ratcatcher, Polka-Dot Man, Peacekeeper, and King Shark. An Elba version of Peacekeeper would certainly be interesting.
The Suicide Squad is due for release on August 6th, 2021.
