Warner Bros. Pictures has released one final trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters which is little more than Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah fighting among each other while nearly-powerless humans look on. Which means Hollywood has finally figured out how to make a Godzilla movie. At the same time, the trailer’s use of “Over the Rainbow” suggests a certain tongue-in-cheek vibe to the film which will be much appreciated should that turn out to be the case. Oh, also, for those of us who remember Godzilla 1985 and some of the films following it, it seems the Americans have made a Super-X attack plane of their own; which makes them a little less powerless in the battle to come.
Also, the inclusion of Millie Bobby Brown’s character suggests they may even be taking a page from the Gamera movies by giving her a bond with Godzilla. I suppose that was something of a preemptive strike should one of the other studios consider licensing the giant flying turtle for its own giant monster franchise. Not that such concerns stopped Daiei Films from creating him as a rival to Godzilla in the first place. But considering it took three tries to get the feel of a Godzilla film right, I doubt Hollywood studios would ever strike the right tone with Gamera.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens on May 31st.
