Uncle Sam Is Back In Freedom Fighters #5
by Josh Davison
[Mild Spoilers Ahead!]
Uncle Sam is back in Philadelphia, and the Ratzi’s aren’t happy about it. Sam is battling Nazi police through the street, and it isn’t going to end anytime soon. The Fuhrer sends a War Wheel and more BOZO’s to put down the Spirit of ‘76. Thankfully, the Freedom Fighters have also discovered that Uncle Sam is back, and they race to the city in the Blue Tracer, their mobile headquarters. Can they get there in time?
In Freedom Fighters #5 finds Uncle Sam back and fighting, even if he isn’t at full power yet. That won’t stop him from fighting the Nazis, and he does so ferociously.
Uncle Sam’s battle and a brief rundown of the history of both he and the Freedom Fighters make up the vast majority of the comic. Fear not though, we do get a reunion between Sam and the Fighters still (spoiler there I guess?).
It is viscerally enjoyable watching the literal embodiment of America beat the tar out of Nazis. It’s great when Captain America does it (though he seems more concerned with the Russians again these days), and it’s great when Uncle Sam himself does it.
The Human Bomb gets a great moment in this book too.
Also, we finally find out who Overman is. No points for guessing the identity though.
Eddy Barrows’ artwork never disappoints. This book looks incredible, and he really knows how to put together an action scene. His shadowing is particularly good in this issue, and he’s helped greatly by the inking of Eber Ferreira. Adriano Lucas’ color work is very atmospheric and darkly beautiful too.
Freedom Fighters #5 marks the long-awaited return of Uncle Sam to help lead the fight against the Nazi hordes. It’s a tense and exciting issue filled with phenomenal artwork from Barrows, Ferreira, and Lucas. This one gets a strong recommendation. Feel free to give it a read.
Freedom Fighters #5 comes to us from writer Robert Venditti, artist Eddy Barrows, inker Eber Ferreira, color artist Adriano Lucas, letters from Andworld Design, and cover artist Barrows with Ferreira and Lucas.
