Comics Salopia: New Comic Event Takes Over Shrewsbury This Weekend
by Olly MacNamee
As well as being a beautiful rural market town which dates back to the Middle Ages, Shrewsbury is also the home of a number of comic book creators including The Walking Dead’s Charlie Adlard, Judge Dredd co-creator, John Wagner and The Invisible Kingdom’s Christian Ward. And, this coming weekend of June 1st and 2nd, the town will be taken over by new comic con venture, Comics Salopia.
With talks and signing spread across the town, it’s something akin to The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, but nearer to my home. I’ll be there sobering up on the Sunday (after what I hope will be a Liverpool win in the European Champions League Final) and interviewing the likes of Yanick Paquette (Earth 1: Wonder Woman), Laurence Campbell, Ben Stenbeck and Duncan Fegredo as we celebrate 25 years of Hellboy, as well as Sarah Graley (Rick and Morty) and writing duo Matt Fitch and Chris Baker (Apollo). Furthermore, there are a whole plethora of talks including Kieron Gillen interviewing Image Comics’ Eric Stephenson, and other panels with the likes of Bryan and Mary Talbot, Sarah McIntyre and Charlie Adlard. Take a look at the full schedule and remember that, while the talks are ticketed, the festival itself is free, with kids’ workshops, a zombie walk through Shrewsbury and more across the weekend. Should be fun.
See you there. Or in the pub.
