Fight To The Death Against The Overman In Freedom Fighters #6

by Josh Davison

[*Mild Spoilers Ahead!]
The Freedom Fighters have finally awoken and retrieved the Spirit of ‘76 himself, Uncle Sam. He’s still recovering, and the Blue Tracer, the Freedom Fighters’ mobile headquarters, has been taken down for repairs in the forests of Vermont. Meanwhile, the Fuhrer has awoken the Overman, and the Fuhrer orders the Overman to find and bring in the Freedom Fighters. The Overman eagerly complies, and he finds the Freedom Fighters with ease.

Freedom Fighters #6 brings us the long-foreshadowed conflict between the Freedom Fighters and the Overman, this Earth’s Nazi-corrupted incarnation of Superman.
Naturally, the fight doesn’t look promising for the Freedom Fighters. Uncle Sam is still weak, and the rest of the team just don’t have the muscle to take on Overman.
Much of the comic consists of that fight with Overman. There is a short prelude with the Fuhrer awakening Overman and Uncle Sam meeting the new team, but the fight gets started almost immediately after that.
So the question then becomes whether the fight is entertaining, and the answer to that question is, “Hell yes.” Seeing the likes of Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, Doll Woman, Black Condor, and the Human Bomb take on a Superman analog is just damn awesome.

This is, of course, largely thanks to the fantastic artwork of Eddy Barrows. His distinct and highly-detailed style allows for many high-impact splash pages which take advantage of the power set and strength of the players involved. Eber Ferreira’s inking makes it all more weighty, and Adriano Lucas’ color art gives it all a vibrant and moody tint.
Freedom Fighters #6 is another phenomenal issue from this maxiseries. We get to see our heroes take on the Ratzi’s strongest soldier, and we’re left to wonder who, if anyone, is going to make it out alive. This one definitely gets a recommendation. Feel free to give it a read.
Freedom Fighters #6 comes to us from writer Robert Venditti, artist Eddy Barrows, inker Eber Ferreira, color artist Adriano Lucas, letters from Andworld Design, and cover artist Barrows with Ferreira and Lucas.
Final Score: 8.5/10
