SDCC 2019: Six Foot Press To Publish Bill Sienkiewicz Series Of Art Books

by James Ferguson

There’s no doubt that Bill Sienkiewicz is a legend in comics. He’s been churning out impressive work for forty years. This October, Six Foot Press will debut the first in a career retrospective series of art books celebrating the artist’s work. Bill Sienkiewicz: Revolution Volume 1 will be available in both standard trade edition and limited edition formats with two more volumes planned to follow.

Sienkiewicz says:

Revolution features a ton of artwork. A lot that people have seen, and plenty from my private notebooks that they have never seen. And that’s just Volume I!

Bill Sienkiewicz: Revolution Volume 1 (Trade Edition) will feature a fabric-wrapped, foil-stamped cover. It will include more than 200 pages of art along with an introduction by writer Neil Gaiman, an interview with Sienkiewicz, and an essay by Ben Davis examining the artist’s process, placing him within context of art and popular culture.

Davis added:

Bill Sienkiewicz is a great comic book artist and a great artist, period. He’s both mastered the visual storytelling of costumed heroics and hatched works of the most singularly weird, personal, and tough-to-categorize kind. Sometimes Sienkiewicz has actually done both at once—which in my opinion is what makes him really great. Just exactly how he’s pulled off this trick is what we try to show in this book, so I hope the result has something new to offer art snobs and super fans alike.

The Limited Edition of the book adds some more bells and whistles. It’s encased in a fabric-covered clamshell box with a collection of 40 individual deluxe reproductions of previously unpublished paintings, drawings, sketches, and mixed media works from forty years of Sienkiewicz’s notebooksa nd personal collections. It also includes a booklet signed by the artist with an introduction by Gaiman, and an interview with Sienkiewicz delving into his influences and techniques.

Charles Kim, Publisher of Six Foot Press and former Associate Publisher of The Museum of Modern Art in New York says:

Bill’s work has served to revolutionize the comic book industry. But he is a fine artist whose experimental techniques and unusual mixing of mediums deserve serious consideration by the larger art world. This three-volume series will give us the chance to explore his output from a new perspective.

Fans attending San Diego Comic-Con can stop by the Bill Sienkiewicz Art booth (#2614) to receive a code for free shipping on pre-orders of the first volumes. Both are available fore pre-order at
