The Covert Team Of Omega Rangers Are Revealed In MMPR #41

by James Ferguson

Jason, Trini, and Zack have gone out to do some charity work in Switzerland, forcing them to give up their roles as Power Rangers…or did they? As we saw at the end of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #40, the trio has traded in the Tyrannosaurus, Sabertooth Tiger, and Mastadon for new suits as Omega Rangers in a far off place. How did they get here and what are they up to?

The focus of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #41 is squarely on these three, showing how far they’ve come from Angel Grove. They’ve literally saved the world before and now they’re trying to protect the entire universe. The size and scope of their mission has been greatly increased. Their friends back home would no doubt be supportive of this, but they’re kept in the dark. It makes you wonder what’s really going on if they have to keep this a secret from those closest to them.
Artist Daniele Di Nicuolo knocked it out of the park with the designs for the Omega Rangers. They look so very cool. They’re sort of a blend between the ninja costumes and the wide-shouldered vest of the Green and White Ranger uniforms.

Colorist Walter Baiamonte adds some nice touches to them to highlight the color of each (e.g. Red for Jason, Yellow for Trini) while emphasizing their dark nature. The Omega Rangers are designed as a covert team so this allows us to have the flashy colors we’re used to with the Power Rangers along with a more muted tone to allow for spy work. It’s the best of both worlds. Also, I really want action figures of these designs.
Jason, Trini, and Zack are not alone in this otherworldly work. They’re joined by a brand new Omega Ranger, guiding them in the field, along with a new mentor and helper at the home base in Savehaven. This further emphasizes the epic nature of their new mission based on the players involved. After Lord Drakkon nearly destroyed everything, they have to work to ensure this will never happen again.

Writer Ryan Parrott introduces some pretty interesting concepts in MMPR #41 that are sure to shake things up. A major plot point gets to the heart of the Morphin Grid itself and the universe’s connection to it. This opens the door to a slew of possibilities, all of which are super dangerous. It’s no wonder a new team of Rangers is needed.
One of the most intriguing elements of this new storyline is Lord Zedd’s scheme. He’s brought in some help to defeat the Power Rangers once and for all. As much as I love the TV show, it was rather formulaic. This grizzled warrior is analyzing every encounter with the teenagers with attitude to search for their weaknesses and take them apart. He’s just beginning to plan, but I’m already dreading what he’ll cook up.

Letterer Ed Dukeshire highlights the alien nature of this new foe and some of the other new faces with some different colored and shaped word balloons. This further drives home the stranger-in-a-strange-land vibe we have going on with Jason, Trini, and Zack. They’re not in Kansas anymore.
Where the previous issue re-introduced us to the characters we know and love, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #41 vastly expanded the scope of this new adventure. We have a better idea of what we’re in for and we’re just getting started. There is so much at stake in this arc as we’re learning the lengths the Omega Rangers must go in order to protect the universe. This issue also branches out into some new areas that will be a true test as to how this series will build upon the vast decades-long mythos of the Power Rangers.
