It seems Star City will still have a chance to fail the Queen family after Arrow ends its run early next year.
TV Guide reports The CW’s seventh superhero show may be an Arrow spinoff centering on Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara), the Earth-2 Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) and Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy) as they face threats in Star City 2046. The premise is, of course, based on Season 7’s Star City 2040 flash-foward, which saw a grown-up William (Ben Lewis) return to Star City with an older Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) and teaming up with Mia, the half-sister William never knew he had. Arrow regulars Harkavay, Rick Gonzalez, and Emily Bett Rickards also appeared in the story as older versions of their characters. Another flash-forward will feature through Arrow‘s eighth and final season and, according to TV Guide, one of the final episodes will serve as a backdoor pilot for the Star City 2046 premise — possible titled Canaries.
Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship, and Oscar Balderrama will serve as executive producers should The CW pick up the series.
Back at the summer TCA, network president Mark Pedowitz mentioned they were talking with Berlanti and his producing partners about a new series to replace Arrow. A spinoff featuring Mia seems like the right idea, but dropping the Arrow title must have some meaning for the forthcoming season. We’re also going to assume the episode introduces Canaries will be the penultimate episode, as Guggenheim has long maintained it would be disconnected from the events of the “Crisis” crossover, but be very much its own thing prior to the 10th and final episode.
Arrow returns to The CW for its final year on October 16th.
